Taking delivery of your Tesla is an exciting moment! Whether it’s your first EV or you’re adding another Tesla to your garage, preparation is key to ensure a smooth delivery experience. Use this comprehensive checklist to guide you through the process, from pre-delivery preparations to inspecting your car on the big day.
Pre-Delivery Preparation
Finalize Payment
- Ensure all financing or payment details are completed in your Tesla account.
- Verify payment methods, including ACH transfers or financing approvals.
- Confirm that the final invoice matches your agreed-upon terms.
Complete Delivery Profile
- Log in to your Tesla account and complete your delivery profile.
- Confirm delivery location, registration details, and any trade-in information.
Insurance Confirmation
- Obtain an insurance policy that covers your Tesla from the delivery date.
- Add Tesla’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to your policy once available.
Prepare for Delivery Location
- Confirm the address and familiarize yourself with parking options.
Download the Tesla App
- Download the Tesla app (iOS or Android). This is essential for car access and setup post-delivery.
Charge Your Home Setup
- Install a Tesla Wall Connector or confirm access to charging options, such as local Superchargers or third-party chargers.
Schedule Delivery Appointment
- Confirm the date and time of delivery in your Tesla account, sms or via email.
- Check for any updates or changes to the schedule.
Delivery Day Checklist
Documents to Bring
- Driver’s License: Ensure it’s valid and matches the registration details.
- Proof of Insurance: Have a copy of your insurance policy ready.
- Payment Method: If any balance remains, bring the required payment method.
- Tesla Account Access: Ensure you have access to your Tesla account for digital documents.
Vehicle Inspection
Take your time inspecting the car. Here’s what to check:
1. Verify Vehicle Records
- Check for the correct full name and address on your paperwork.
- Confirm the vehicle’s VIN matches your paperwork.
2. Exterior Inspection
- Inspect body exterior paint for defects.
- Inspect vehicle underside (front and rear) for signs of scraping or damage.
- Check for any obvious body panel misalignment or gaps (e.g., frunk gap, charge port, front and rear lights flush with hood/panels, glass roof panels aligned, no leaks).
- Inspect wheel rims for damage and ensure all 4 valve covers on tires.
- Inspect all glass for signs of distortion, scratches, or cracks.
- Check for proper windshield and windshield trim installation.
- Inspect all edges of the roof glass panel and rear window.
- Test all doors to ensure they open and close without unreasonable effort or sound. Check paint in areas not visible when doors are closed.
- Test the opening and closing of the trunk with the auto-close button; ensure it latches and seals automatically.
- Test the opening and closing of the frunk; check paint in areas not visible when frunk is closed.
- Check for the towing eye under the frunk mat, and ensure it can be easily removed.
- Ensure door windows auto-close completely when doors are closed.
- Check all front and rear exterior lights for signs of condensation.
- With all doors open, inspect the weather seals around door gaps and windows.
3. Interior Inspection
- Inspect seat upholstery, door surfaces, dash, liner, and carpets (including rear seats, frunk, and trunk).
- Check windshield and windows for ripples in the glass.
- Check windshield for distorted view.
- Check clothing hook operation (left and right).
- Test all seat belts for proper operation.
- Ensure front seats don’t squeak when moved in all directions.
- Check rear seats for proper fold-down operation.
- Ensure the bottom of the back seat is securely attached to its base.
- Check sun visor operation and mirror condition.
- Check rearview mirror for any warping or distortion.
- Check all 4 windows to ensure they open and close properly.
- Gently test the driver and passenger door emergency release. (Tip: Roll-down the windows to ensure no damage can occur)
4. Infotainment Inspection
- Check for any error messages on the display screen.
- Access the “Toybox” window via the More Apps icon than open Sketch Pad, and use the Sketch Pad to test for phantom touches.
- Ensure AC/Heat works at full power without strange noises.
- Test the sound system (move fade/balance to all four points to verify speakers).
- Test steering wheel position controls for proper operation.
- Test the horn by pressing the center of the steering wheel.
- Test windshield wipers.
- Test cameras. Click the “Car” icon then Service then click: Camera Preview.
- Check side mirrors for proper folding and position adjustment.
5. Connectivity Inspection
- Test connectivity in all USB ports (1 USB-A (Glove box) & 2 USB-C (Center console) in front, 2 USB-C in rear).
- Check 12V DC receptacles for power. (1 Center Console, 1 Trunk)
- Test wireless phone charger.
- Test music and phone streaming; ensure radio reception is good.
- Test both key cards on the B-pillar.
- Pair your smartphone over Bluetooth and verify functionality (unlock, precondition, etc.).
6. Lighting Inspection
- Test all interior and exterior lights:
- Vanity mirror lights
- Front overhead lights (driver and passenger)
- Rear overhead lights (left and right)
- Door pocket lights (front and rear)
- Door puddle lights (front and rear)
- Console compartment lights (middle and rear)
- Door latch and window button lights
- Steering wheel control lights
- Glove box light
- Frunk and trunk lights
- Fog lights
- Headlights (low and high beam)
- Park lights, turn signals, running lights, and brake lights
7. Charging Inspection
- Check charge port door for proper operation and alignment.
- Ensure the vehicle accepts a charge.
- Test the mobile charging kit with its cables and adapters (J1772, NEMA 5-15, NEMA 14-50).
- Test a supercharger on-site.
8. Final Items
- Confirm with your delivery specialist that your car is marked as DELIVERED in Tesla’s network.
- Ensure you have copies of all necessary paperwork, including a signed purchase agreement. Ask for paper copies even if available digitally.
Post-Delivery Checklist
Activate Features
- Check your Tesla account for any software upgrades, such as Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self-Driving.
- Enable and customize driver profiles.
Learn Your Tesla
- Spend time exploring features like Autopilot, climate controls, and charging settings.
- Use Tesla’s online resources and in-car tutorials for guidance.
Check Local Incentives
